Meet Dr. Tyler VanderWeele, winner of the 2025 IPPA Global Positive Health & Wellbeing Researcher Award. Dr. VanderWeele is the Director of Harvard University’s Human Flourishing Program, which has more than 200,000 participants in 22 countries on six continents. He is also Co-Director of the Initiative on Health, Religion, and Spirituality and a Professor of Epidemiology at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Tyler’s research has focused on the study of happiness and human flourishing, causal inference in epidemiology, and the relationship between religion and health and its relation to lowering mortality, depression, suicide, and divorce rates and improving many other outcomes. He is the author of the book Measuring Well-Being, along with an influential approach to conceptualizing and assessing flourishing. He defines flourishing as a “state in which all aspects of a person’s life are good.” He has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, TIME Magazine, The Economist, CBS, and CNN. He is a frequent contributor to Psychology Today.
