What if resilience is more than simply “bouncing back” from chronic pain? In this episode of The Pulse, Dr. Afton L. Hassett explores the science of resilience and how cultivating psychological strengths can improve the quality of life for people living with chronic pain.

Do you care for patients suffering from chronic pain and fatigue, or research pain management and treatment? Do you manage chronic pain in your own life?

Learn how to:

  1. Articulate the role of resilience in the experience and management of chronic pain.
  2. Identify psychological, behavioural, and social factors that contribute to resilience in individuals living with chronic pain.
  3. Discuss evidence-informed strategies for incorporating resilience-focused approaches into comprehensive chronic pain care.

Dr. Hassett, PsyD, is a pain psychologist, Associate Professor, and Director of Pain and Opioid Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan Medical School. An internationally recognized leader in pain research, she has led and collaborated on numerous NIH-funded initiatives focused on chronic pain, resilience, and patient-centred care.

Drawing on decades of clinical and research experience, Dr. Hassett will discuss resilience as a dynamic, evidence-based approach to chronic pain management. Participants will gain insight into the psychological, behavioural, and social factors that foster resilience, explore emerging research on resilience-focused interventions, and learn practical strategies for integrating these approaches into comprehensive pain care to support improved functioning and well-being.

Joel Milam, Ph.D, a professor at UC Irvine and a health behavior scientist whose research focuses on psychological and behavioral adaptations to stress and disease will host this episode.

This episode of The Pulse will offer clinicians, researchers, and health professionals an engaging discussion on the evolving role of resilience in helping individuals thrive despite chronic pain.

An internationally recognized expert in pain psychology, Dr. Hassett has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the editorial boards of Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine and Arthritis Care & Research. She is a past President of the Association of Rheumatology Professionals, a division of the American College of Rheumatology and is widely recognized for her leadership in advancing resilience-based approaches to chronic pain research and treatment.
